Israelite House of David - The Baseball Field
This is a view of the Israelite House of David baseball field from the gate near the Trailer park office. This was the beginning of night baseball. The grand stands were behind home plate.
As baseball declined the field was used for thrill shows, soccer games, a rodeo and Grand Old Opry singers. We also enjoyed the St. Joe football team using the field for practice. We sold our bleachers to a new auto speed way down at Plymouth, Indiana.
After the colony split in 1930, there would be teams from both colonies carrying on the House of David Baseball tradition. Here we have a photo of our "home" team taken at the colony park in 1930. The colony members from left: John Nimitz, Earl Boyersmith, Sidney Smith, Jack Crow, JB Boone, Oscar Wade, Jack Herron, Tom Dewhirst, Bob Dewhirst, Frank Wyland, Ernie Selby, Leo Wiltbank, Millard Wilson, Hobie Nelson, and Mud Williams. This was more of a photo to be used for advertising or sold as postcards. Some of the members such as Nimitz, Wade, Herron and Wilson did not play ball for our team. We just needed a few more bodies to fill out the uniforms!!!!!
